If you ask me for advice about not really liking your job or finding joy in it, I’ll most likely advise you to quit.
I am part of team passion over pay and know some people who will go for a job with a fat pay-check rather than follow their passion, some say passion is overrated.
Then again, a fat paycheck can make you fall in love with a job you use to hate, an argument for another day.
I noticed during my first internship that I get really bored with 9-5 and my service year re-confirmed it.
The reflection questions I asked in the last newsletter seem to be the highlight of the newsletter for most of us and it is very similar to a post I came across on Twitter last year.
I came across the thread on Twitter last year especially during the period I was having a conversation with my friend about quitting or not quitting, I know deep down that there are things I do where I am my best and feel most alive so the thread was, in fact, a needed reminder.
You might be thinking, am I saying I hate my job? next week’s newsletter will answer your questions.
The tweet author started by saying there are two things involved in one’s career, either you like your new job or you don’t.
Then you go on to either settle for the job or keep applying. If you have another source of income like parents, siblings, etc you can decide to keep job hunting, but if you are the breadwinner or don’t have any financial source then you might want to take the job.
He asked, “when you look at your overall boss, do you see yourself becoming like them in years to come”? If yes then stay and learn as much as you can and if otherwise, which sector or environment do you find yourself working for a long term? Start taking smaller courses, or adding to your skill while still on your current job.
He mentioned that you owe no one but yourself and loved ones your loyalty so when you get a better offer, don’t overthink it, put yourself first because your employer will put the organization ahead of you.
This thread helped me see things in a different light and I reflected on it that, nah, I do not see myself being in my boss’s position in years to come but can I resign? No, because there are bills to pay.
Instead, I started looking at ways I can enjoy my job better while also on the look for better opportunities.
If you read the previous newsletter you’ll see the similarities.
Firstly, you have to be aware of your interest and passion, where you see yourself in years to come, and what you think of your job.
Spending most of our life on the wrong job can make one’s life miserable.
Tell yourself the truth and work towards where you see yourself in 2-5-10 years to come.
Lastly, it all doesn’t come out fully formed, little by little, it unfolds.
Some days I’m crystal clear on what I want career-wise, some other times, it’s all uncertainty, but I know for a fact that it gets clearer by the day, bit by bit.
Remember to take it easy on yourself.
You’re doing the best you can.
I’ll share a personal experience of this in my next newsletter,
I hope to hear from you too.
Always,
Yours cruise and truth,
Nana.
I am team passion. I have experienced it well enough and I can say working without passion can make one more miserable.
This article talks about me.
